Dr Keturah Hoffman, Board Member of the Cosmetic Physicians College of Australasia explains that “when a product is labelled natural it’s probably meaningless as it’s not a controlled term.” Plus, she adds that “if natural actually meant ‘as nature provided’ yes, it might mean it’s good, but cyanide and arsenic are natural too.” So the term doesn’t always equal truth.
Confusing? You betcha. Especially when we also throw in the fact that not all ‘natural’ or botanical ingredients are extracted from plant sources and the active ingredient in a product may even be synthesized in a laboratory (mainly due to cost). Which is why it pays to know a little more about what you’re spending your money on.
